“A new command I give you:
Love one another.
As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples,
if you love one another.”
Scripture: John 13:34-35
Context:
In part 1, we have talked about our nuclear family and how we should treat each other.
This week we are focusing on the church family. Scripture talks a lot about how we should act and love one another. In Hebrews 10 we should stir one another on. In the book of Acts we see how the church does everything together as one.
God's purpose for the church internally is to build each other up. To care for one another, love, pray and break bread together (Act 2:42).
Externally we are called to fulfil the great commission (Matt 28:16-20)
Because of sin every family will have their flaws and hardship, we don't expect each nuclear family to be perfect and in the same way our church family is not perfect either. The church family experiences similar brokenness, hardship and difficulties. But we have a Perfect Father and He is commanding us to strive for Unity, Oneness and Loving each other.
In John 13:35 - Jesus is commanding us to "Love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
When the world sees us as One and in Union with each other. We are set apart from the world. When we act as One, we shine bright.
The world will know we are different to them. Ultimately the world we know we are CHRISTIANS.
This is our identity, this is who we are, followers of the most perfect, most loving, most gracious and most Holy, our Lord and Saviour - JESUS CHRIST.
